Comedy Soc announce Edinburgh fundraiser

HUGE poster
Friday, 30th January 2009
The YUSU Comedy Society is putting together a three-hour show, named HUGE (Help Us Get to Edinburgh), to raise money for performing at the Edinburgh Festival.

The Shambles, the Comedy Soc Sketch Troupe and a number of stand-up comedians will perform at the event. A new panel show, in the style of Mock the Week, will also take place.

Comedy Society Treasurer Simon Winkler told The Yorker: “We aim to raise over £600 which shall go towards the cost of the venue.”

He added: “It’s a great privilege to represent York University in Edinburgh and show the fine comic talent available in Yorkshire, perhaps the funniest county in Britain.”

Comedy Soc performed at Edinburgh Festival last year, taking an improvised show in the style of Whose Line is it Anyway? and a written show. This year, they hope to take an entirely improvised show.

HUGE will be performed on Thursday Week 6 in V/045. More event details can be found on Facebook here.

Mock the Week, HIGFNY, Whose Line is it Anyway...York comedy soc's creativity knows no bounds. Watch out, Footlights!

agree with the above, although it's easy to be cynical about student comedy, and obviously good luck to them, I can't think many people would be excited about students doing 100% improv or regurgitated panel shows.

Hey guys, just to set a few things straight:

No1 Anonymous person:

Actually it isn't really a copy of Mock the Week, it's a combination of a few ideas and games and Mock the Week is the nearest thing to compare it to.

Second of all, The Shambles aren't a carbon copy of 'Whose line is it anyway', they have invented their own games which they play in their regular shows along with some of the more recognisable games from the TV show. Referencing comedy at Oxbridge isn't really relevant, as both universities have Improv troupes who make no effort at all to distinguish themselves from 'Whose line...' unlike the Shambles, who try different things.

So really it's only HIGNFY that merits such an accusation of being uncreative. Only, it's a show all about york that has original material written for it every fortnight by students. Which is a big task in itself.

....HUGE also includes a sketch show and stand-up, again all done by york students.

Hope that clears things up. Cheers!

To anon 1 & 2, do not cross Miranda - she will eat you alive!

And who really cares if things are derivative as long as they're funny?

For my money The Shambles isn't derivative anyway, it's very improvised and 99.9% of the time very funny with very little recycled material.

Oh, and a little side note. I hope this "Mock the Week" style thing isn't called Mock the York Miranda, cos if it is I WILL sue...

Agree with #4 - HIGNFY is funnier and more popular precisely because people know the format! Sadly never understand what the shambles are all about though.

Looking forward to it. Might even see you in Edinburgh!
