Safety concerns lead to section closure in Library

Library
Friday, 30th January 2009
A significant section of the second floor of J.B.Morrell Library has been closed due to a ceiling leak and potential danger of asbestos.

The decision to cordon off a section of the library was taken after heavy rain caused water to leak through the ceiling in a corner of the second floor.

Because of the potential danger of asbestos in the roof voids, advice was followed to close the affected area to allow maintenance work to be carried out.

Staff at the library said that “action was taken with safety as the paramount consideration”.

Due to the problem of being unable to use lighting with water leaking through the ducts, the area that had to be cordoned off was much larger than the area actually affected.

After securing the area, staff described how their second concern was that library users still had access to the stock in the affected area, which covered a large part of the English literature section.

This problem was addressed by moving some stock to open access North Room 1 and by a system where students requested books which library staff periodically retrieved from the cordoned off area.

Maintenance work has now been completed and almost all of the area reopened. However, a small area remains closed off as a precaution in case of the potential risk that future leaks may cause the ceiling tiles in that area to collapse. Some of the stock from this area will therefore remain in North Room 1.

A large programme of work is planned to start in 2009 to remove asbestos and refurbish the J.B.Morrell Library. Library staff have said that they would welcome any ideas from students about how to best to continue to provide the Library service during this period of work.

Everyone thinks this university is made of grey boring concrete. Nope - it's all asbestos. Even the ducks are made of the stuff.

Rumour has it that someone punched a ceiling tile. Another source claimed that part of the actual roof caved in. FACT.
