News round-up

Heslington East Artist's Impression
An artist's impression of Heslington East
Sunday, 1st February 2009
An update on Heslington East, information on York Come Dancing and Humanitarian Aid for Gaza. The Yorker brings you a round-up of some of the things that have happened this week.
  • Council approves Phase One of Heslington East

The university has received planning permission for all of the buildings that will form Phase One of the Heslington East development.

The City of York Council has approved plans for a law and management building and an academic 'hub building'. The hub building will be four storeys high, and will hold up to 1,333 people.

Work on both of these buildings will begin in March, with the former due to be ready in October and the latter to be built by December. Work has already begun on the new Goodricke College, which will also be ready for the start of the next academic year.

A university spokesman said: "The £500 million development at Heslington East will not only further enhance the university’s international reputation as a centre of excellence for research, teaching and learning, but also provide a substantial investment in the local and regional economy."

  • York Come Dancing sells out

Tickets for RAG event York Come Dancing sold out in less than three hours, though a YSTV feed will be viewable in The Courtyard for £2.

Eleven couples will be competing at the event. Each couple sees a campus celebrity paired with a member of York Dancesport. Campus celebrities involved include Dan Taylor, YUSU President Tom Scott and Nouse editor Henry James Foy.

The contestants are being trained by Joel and Sarah Chapman, from the Rock Academy of Dance in York. Joel and Sarah will be judging on the night, and their marks along with votes from the audience will determine the winners. Joey Ellis and Matt Cornock will be hosting the event.

York Come Dancing takes place on Sunday 8th February in L/N/028. For a video of the contestants training, click here.

  • Students raise £1,000 for Gaza victims

Students walking from York to Selby today do so in the knowledge that they have already raised over £1,000.

As reported previously by The Yorker, a number of different societies have decided to work together to raise money for those affected by the Gaza crisis.

Originally, the organisers had planned to walk from Harrogate to York, but this was changed due to logistical problems.

In a message sent to members of the Facebook group, organiser John Nicholls urged people to donate whatever they could. Around £50 was raised at Vanbrugh stalls, and at press time £1,338 had been donated on Justgiving.

The campaign has the support of Hugh Bayley and John Grogan, MPs for York Central and Selby respectively. Both politicians agreed to join students for part of the walk today.

To everybody who attended the walk; thank you

It went brilliantly well, 53 people turned up to walk 20 miles in the cold and snow, but it was good fun (in a slightly masochistic way) and we definitely enjoyed it!

We can hardly feel our feet, but we've already raised a lot of money and we're hoping for more, so we are counting on your support.

Pain.

In other news, we broke the £1500 barrier (excluding gift aid) and will be continuing to fundraise afterwards.

And I think I'll go with watching it online to save money
