A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Please note, these are only rumours and the students listed have not spoken to The Yorker.
Candidates are not permitted to campaign until Tuesday week 8.
Langrish would certainly stand a good chance in the election, having a wealth of experience. He is the current YUSU Policy and Campaigns Officer with Michael Batula, and is also currently the Chair of YUSU Council and a GSA Returning Officer.
His previous experience includes positions as Alcuin Vice-Chair for Welfare and Support and YUSU Training Officer last year. Additionally, he has been a History Board of Studies Rep since 2006.
Third-year English student Matt Oliver was the Vanbrugh Chair last year. He is also a keen sports player, and was part of the Vanbrugh football side that won the 2nds League last year.
Oliver is very popular within his college, but only time will tell how far that popularity reaches outside Vanbrugh.
Third-year History and Politics student Dan Taylor is perhaps most famous for the incident which led to Grace Fletcher-Hackwood being no-confidenced last year. His previous experience includes his position as Derwent Vis Ents Rep last year with Will Marle.
Taylor is also a regular for the Derwent rugby team. He was due to run for Services and Finance Officer last year, promising to give Matt Burton "a good run for his money", but he withdrew at the last minute.

Dan Taylor will be joining the Army next September, so it is extremely unlikely that he'll run for president.

I heard Tam Sheriff was possibly putting in a late bid for presidency...
What about Laura Payne? Is she too disappointed by the student populace to try again?
Also, do you all think we will escape having a new 'joke candidate' or will be ruled by a ninja next year?
If Shanks became president, I think I would actually jump off Central Hall. King Herod for head of NHS childcare would yet be a better choice...

If someone Shanks does run, the three way split between himself, Langrish and Oliver could mean victory for any of them.
It's an STV system though so the split doesn't matter. If 45% rank Oliver then Langrish and 45% rank Shanks then Langrish, Langrish would still win overall.
And I guess we'll have to wait until W8 to hear the final list of candidates. I'm assuming that names can't be released during the nomination period, at least.
And I hope Payne does go for something. She was a good candidate and against anyone but Cap'n Tom she would have had a great chance. Indeed she beat Nadz by a decent section.
But I have only heard people saying that she won't be running for anything :(
I hope that Tim Ngwena chooses to run for President. He is such a legend and would sort out that yusu clique
I don't think it's ever going to be possible to "sort out" the YUSU clique. I mean, Tom Scott was as much an outsider to YUSU politics as you can get, yet the clique is still strong. 6 people working in the same office means it's bound to happen every year.
According to a current sab, it's likely to be Langrish against Shanks, with any other candidates very much coming out of leftfield...
Here's the running I'm hearing:
Shanks, not going for President but may re-run for his position. The chances are he wont.
Tom Langrish and Charles Bushby definitely in the running for President.
Lionel Owusu a good outside bet to run as well, Matt Oliver an even more outside bet though I'm not sure of his intentions.
Tim Ngwena and Rhianna Kinchin for Socs. and Coms. along with someone else. Charlie Leyland to re-run for the 'Academic' position, Matt Pallas for 'Welfare'.
#15 - If your going to Sandhurst, you might want to listen to the iplayer/podcast of BBC Radio 5 live's breakfast show from this morning, they were doing a special programme all about the military and life at Sandhurst.

Udy Onwudike called me today, and has confirmed that he has already arranged to take a year out from his studies so he can be YUSU Pres. He's 100% confident of victory.
