RAG Week ends on a high

RAG Week 2009
Wednesday, 18th February 2009
Saturday saw RAG Week end with a bang, with the parade in town, and RAG Love in the Courtyard in the evening.

The theme of this year's RAG parade was Through the Ages, and over 500 students from all eight colleges turned out dressed as everything from Celts to Robots.

The Vice-Chancellor, along with the Sheriff of York, judged the best dressed college, with Alcuin, dressed as Cavemen, claiming the prize for the second year in a row.

As well as the procession through town and a large amount of money collection for RAG's six charities, there were a range of other entertainments.

The Zamar Gospel Choir, the Dave Smyth Jazz trio and excerpts from York Come Dancing all appeared on the main stage, and Student Action provided face painting in a stall in the main square.

RAG parade organiser Zoe Stones told The Yorker: "It was a fantastic day with a brilliant turnout. We're still in the lengthy counting process, but there have been tins with over £100 each in them, so we're hopeful!"

RAG Chair Helen Adams was thrilled with the turnout, expressing an especial delight at "traditionally less spirited colleges really looking very impressive".

Saturday evening brought RAG Love in association with The Courtyard, the event that brought RAG week to a close. The event sold out, raising even more money for RAG.

Adams was impressed with how well the event went, saying that there was "such a good atmosphere, and the RAG tags and chocolate fountains were highly successful additions. Even L/N/028 looked like a convincing club venue with all those Valentine's helium balloons!"

There are more buckets yet to be counted and more meetings about Fusion/RAG and YUSU/RAG profit splits following Wall St Crash and Viking Raid, and so the final figures for the week are yet to be announced.

YUSU/RAG profit splits?
Surely any fundraising carried out was in the the name of RAG, and the profit from any events or ventures should go to RAG alone?

Traditionally less spirited colleges? Halifax perchance?

YUSU hold Viking Raids and this one had the added bonus of being in aid of RAG. It wasn't purely a RAG event though and would have sold as well outside of it. Whether proceeds should go completely to RAG or not is a debate that has been going on for some time and will continue to do so, I suspect!

The first Viking Raids were all for RAG iirc.

100% proceeds? I wasn't a student at the time but I vaguely recall having heard the history from GFH and company when the debate was raging last year... Not sure what the actual story was though

When is the total of the RAG Parade fundraising being released btw?

It was certainly advertised as such. Perhaps it was profit, rather than proceeds (the buses and t-shirts do cost money), but YUSU didn't make a profit from it,.

From what i remember of the RAG committee 07/08, 100% of the profits did in fact go to RAG on the first viking raid.

Since then YUSU has taken a slice out of the profits. I am not actually sure why this change happened... but it is a bit shit.

It may well have been that YUSU simply covered their own costs. Not sure.

Oli, UGM it?

Last time i tried to write a UGM it epically failed. Although, in hindsight it was to rename the SU building, "The Rich Croker SU building". Maybe you could do the draft both of them, UGM man?

No. They're useful. Obviously you haven't used the internet very much.

And I'm sure that there are plenty of people who post as much as me. I don't have too much time but am intruiged by the arguments surrounding these. By commenting, receiving responses etc. I am able to learn more about each situation and get a better grasp of the scenarios in question.

But I am able to write a reasonable UGM in 15-30 minutes so I'm happy to draft one if you want. Not sure I'll write one to rename the SU building the "Rich Croker SU building" though >.>

I didn't want to be in Strictly and encouraging discussion is good.

Also, focus on RAG for goodness sake. They did fantastically and I'm eager to hear the result.

For goodness sake get over yourself. Posting repeatedly with "Jason Rose this" is irrelevant of the issue at hand. This thread is regarding charity and deliberately moving aside from that is malicious. There is nothing wrong with posting and saying that I ameagerly anticipating the announcement of how much money RAG has raised. It's a perfectly valid comment.

To those dedicated individuals spending so much of their time attacking everything Jason says;

I would suggest finding a more constructive way to use your time rather than advising Jason on how to use his. I am sorry but using variants of "don't you have anything better to do" in every single thread is becoming increasingly ironic.
