Fire in Wentworth College

Firetrucks
Fire trucks outside Wentworth
Friday, 27th February 2009
A fire broke out in one of the accommodation blocks of Wentworth College yesterday.

A kitchen in the third floor of accommodation block B1 in Wentworth caught fire a short while ago. The building was evacuated and fire services called, arriving at approximately 2.50 pm.

Three fire trucks are on the scene and have contained the fire with use of high pressured water hoses. The fire may also have damaged the second floor of the building.

Firemen are not yet sure what caused the fire, but an investigation is underway to determine whether it was human error or an electrical fault.

According to firefighter Alan Blackledge two appliances, a microwave and toaster, were severely damaged and there was 20% damage to all goods and properties in the kitchen and 80% surface damages.

The corridor immediately outside the kitchen also suffered damages.

Students were allowed back into their accommodation a short while ago, an hour after the incident. However, all kitchens in the affected block are off limits at least until the end of the day.

The affected kitchen is off limits until further notice, and students in the apartment have been given the option of spending the night in a B&B.

Hang on a minute, I'm no firefighter, but surely the percentages mean that 20% of goods were damaged and 80% of surfaces were damaged, while 80+20 does indeed equal 100, I'm pretty sure that it doesn't mean that 100% of the kitchen was damaged!

Still sounds pretty bad regardless though...

Haha that is brilliant. 'That amounts to a total of 100% damage' is one of my favourite quotes of the year.

As it is mine.

Hope everyone is alright and the block gets fixed up in no time. I'm not holding my breath though...

Firemen and firefighter. You just answered your own question

And firemen is fine. Firefighter is also fine. It doesn't matter. Firemen does have connotations of them being men, though the word itself comes from the word "man" as in mankind and not meaning specifically male. Either way, firefighter is fine. Better than firekiller anyway
