Know your Part Time Officer: Ents

YUSU Elections 2009 02
Friday, 6th March 2009
The Yorker interviews Sam Daniels and Suzi Ellis, who are running together for Entertainments Officer. Daniels is a second-year studying history and history of art and Ellis is second-year English student. They are running unopposed.
  • Relevant experience?

Sam Daniels and Suzi Ellis: We were both Alcuin College Ents officers for 2007/8 and thoroughly enjoyed it. We helped coordinate the Alcuin 40th Anniversary celebrations in the summer, which included a Summer Fete and Ball for over 200 people including alumni. Currently, we are Alcuin College Policy and Campaigns Officers and are involved in the Save B Henry's Campaign. Sam has had experience organising hospitality events for the FA at Wembley Stadium, and was involved in organising events surrounding the FA Community Shield 2007. Suzi is Secretary for Fusion 2009.

  • Why are you running?

SD & SE: Firstly, we both enjoyed the responsibilities that came with being Ents Officers last year, and it was this role that got us interested in the larger position of YUSU Ents Officers. This year has especially drawn us to the position because of the new YUSU bar.

Secondly, there has been controversy about the YUSU bar and the effects it would have on college bars. However, this is inevitable in a collegiate system, and we feel that this year one of the most important jobs of the Entertainments Officers is to ensure the popularity of campus entertainment: collegiate or YUSU, alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

We welcome healthy competition between colleges, as this promotes better events, but we want to build college relationships to work together. We strongly believe that college bars can be successful in their own right if we all work together.

Last but not least, we enjoy doing it. We put our all into Alcuin entertainment and now want to put our all into campus-wide entertainment.

  • Why should students vote for you?

SD & SE: Students should vote for us because we feel we have a good balance of wanting to continue the way the position of YUSU Entertainments Representative is run and wanting to bring in changes.

We are enthusiastic about the work that needs to be done to ensure the YUSU bar and the college bars run alongside one another in harmony - we are dedicated to keeping the college bars up and running. This can be seen in our past experience with the successful 'Save B-Henry's' campaign. We have exciting policies that will ensure students enjoying what’s on offer on campus such as late licences (3am) and bar specific drinks deals.

However, we also have ideas of how to keep the bars being successful on nights when they're not holding late licences. Students should also vote for us because non-alcoholic events are as important to us as events selling alcohol. Dry events can be very popular and very successful and we want to work with welfare officers to help these to become as big as late licence events. Our ideas for this include bigger movie nights, sports nights and games nights more collaboration with societies and events that happen during the day.

  • The best thing I've done at uni is...

SD: I would have to say joining the Alcuin JCRC in my first term as Ents Rep. It was daunting, but the rewards have been great; I've made some fantastic friends, and I've done for a year what I enjoy: putting on events. There's no other feeling like seeing an event which you've put so much time and effort into packed with people having a great time.

SE: For me, I would probably say being involved in Fusion. Being on the committee for such a big society has involved an extremely large amount of work but the rewards are unbelievable. During dress rehearsals, to see the magnitude of what we have achieved together was amazing. The experience of the organisation of such a large event is invaluable. The fact that all the proceeds are going to charity makes the work so worthwhile and this coupled with the amount of fun I have had while organizing and attending smaller events and organizing and being a member of the cast for the show makes being on the Fusion committee the best thing I've done at uni (as of yet!!...)

  • Guilty pleasure?

SD: Gossip Girl!!

SE: Unfortunately this has to be Westlife, I love them!
