Emily Scott: my experience of Roses

emily scott
Wednesday, 13th May 2009
In what happens to be one of the most unforgettable weekends in the history of the Roses tournament, York marked its dominance by retaining the Carter-James trophy on "the right side of the Pennines". York Sport President elect Emily Scott tells The Yorker all about her weekend.

Thursday:

12.30pm: Finish my penultimate exam, bit of a relief to have it over with Roses this weekend! Time for a bit of lunch and a catch up with a friend in the Courtyard.

2.00-4.00pm: Stewarding the storage room while watching Madagascar 2! No Lancaster people spotted yet, so stewarding involved manning an empty room bar a couple of laptops!

6.00pm-2.00am: Back to stewarding the night shift in the accommodation in Alcuin after a quick break. Watching The Lord of the Rings seemed a great shout, but found out round 9.30 that the 7 Lancastrians who were meant to be staying on Thursday night opted out of the lecture hall floor and found a hotel instead. Suited me fine as it meant an earlier night's sleep!

Friday:

10.00am-2.00pm: Stewarding the storage room, this time with Lancaster stuff to look after (and half of their men's tennis team chilling in the back of the room).

2.30pm: Managed to pop down to 22 Acres and catch the end of York's domination in the Men's 2nds Rugby 7s. Then over to the Sports Centre as quickly as possible to cheer on UYHC in the Women's 2nds Indoor Hockey. Unfortunately I had to leave at half time (when it was a very tense 1-1) to go to Goodricke and leave for Roses skiing.

On the bus to Rossendale (in Lancashire) my phone was continually going off with updates of the indoor hockey and of the overall score. York had quickly made up for the eight points lost the weekend before and were already looking in good stead for the tournament.

5.00pm: I was racing for the mixed 2nds and ladies' teams. Even though York may not have raced at their best, we still won comprehensively, with Lancaster winning only one heat out of a possible 18. And that was only because of a York skiier straddling a gate, not because they were quicker!

So another 14 points to York secured. The bus on the way home was lively, with York well ahead with 62.5-14.5. Having said this I for one was not going to assume we were definitely going to win, given the closeness of last year, despite York's strength on the Friday and Saturday morning.

Once we got back to York, it was a quick pasta dinner and to bed for me as Saturday morning meant hockey!

Saturday:

8.15am: With a 10am push-back for the ladies' [hockey] 2nds, we had to be at the pitch for 9, meaning getting up at 8.15.

11.15am: 65 minutes in and it was still scoreless, but then Lancaster made a break and regrettably got through our valiant defence and finally a goal was scored. 1-0 to Lancaster. With barely five minutes to go, we knew we needed to play hard, but given our missed opportunities, particularly at the end of the first half, I think we all saw our chances of not being defeated pass by when that goal was given. I for one had to try very hard not to cry at that point.

Despite losing, it was a good result considering we lost 4-1 last year and (I think) 2-0 the year before. It was still an achievement, but rather heartwrenching to hold them to a draw for so long and just lose in the closing minutes of the game. But then that's sport.

11.45am: After our match, I stuck around by the astro and cheered on the men's 2nds [hockey] for a bit, before heading off to 22 Acres, via the YUSU building to collect boxes of foam hats and swords. We then went across to watch some of the men's 2nds rugby, while distributing "Go York!" swords and hats, as well as programs.

1.00pm: Back across to the astro to watch the ladies' 1sts hockey match, which ended in a scoreless draw. Then the men's 1sts, which was a tense match. Last year, this was the match that was needed to be won or drawn to secure victory. Then, the boys went 3-2 down, but Richard de Boltz scored a stunning equalizer to bring the Carter James trophy back to the right side of the Pennines.

4.00pm: At the end of the hockey, it was a run back over to 22 Acres to catch the 2nd half of the men's 1sts rugby. As suspected after their fantastic BUCS season, York were dominating and, despite the heavy rain, won with relative ease.

Bumped into Alex Lacy down at 22 Acres and found out we'd already won Roses!! Slightly different to the closeness of last year, but wooo!! Let's hope we can bring the cup back next year!!
