Exam stress leads to excessive student drinking

Beers
Sunday, 17th May 2009
In a recent survey, 51% of students admitted that excessive drinking is stopping them from performing at their best in university. One in five students (22%) admitted to drinking more when they feel under pressure.

The survey was commissioned by global premium drinks business Diageo to mark the launch of a new campaign in union bars about responsible drinking. Diageo were investigating the effects of exam stress on student drinking behaviour, and found that 67% of students claim exams are the biggest source of stress at university, more so than relationships or money.

Regarding the results of the suvery, NUS Vice President of Welfare Ama Uzowuru said: “There’s no doubt that students are under increased pressure at exam time but drinking too much can add to that stress.”

By trying to escape exam stress through excessive drinking, 46% of students claimed they cannot study or revise effectively the next day. The survey also showed that part of the problem was students’ lack of awareness of how many units are in their drinks. Only 24% of students knew how many units are in a pint of beer, and only 34% knew how many units are in a glass of wine.

Diageo, who make Guinness, Smirnoff and Baileys, want to increase awareness of the recommended guidelines by introducing beer mats, bar runners, pool balls and posters showcasing different types of drinks and their equivalent number of units to UK student campuses.

Anthony Walker, Corporate Relations Executive of Diageo GB, said: “We want to help students to stay on top of their game as exam season kicks off by giving them the tools they need to keep track of what they’re drinking.”

The Department of Health say that the amount of alcohol consumed in a single day should not regularly exceed 2 to 3 units for women and 3 to 4 units for men.

Good for Diageo. Drinking excess increases stress, reduces health and damages grades, on average... same with cans of Relentless and smoking, etc.
