Fire Service called to York Minster

York Minster
Wednesday, 3rd June 2009
Last night, the fire service was called and Minster evacuated as smoke was seen coming from the undercroft.

The fire alarm at the Minster went off at approximately 8:40pm yesterday evening. At the time members of the York chapter house choir, who were mid-rehearsal, were evacuated along with other members of the public. Many had to leave their personal possessions inside the building.

About ten minutes after the evacuation, the fire service arrived. At approximately 9:20 pm the fire service were still inside the building and the problem had not been resolved. At the time of writing it is unknown what the source of the smoke was, but an electrical fault has been ruled out.

One of the students who was evacuated from the Minster said that it was very unexpected as usually you just assume a fire alarm will come to nothing.
