York Apprentice 2009: final challenge preview

Apprentice Launch 2009
Saturday, 6th June 2009
After two teams were eliminated on Thursday and an additional team went yesterday, three teams remain and will be hosting events on campus.

On days three and four, the six teams still in the competition had to design a new drinks brand, create an advert with YSTV and put together an accompanying poster. Teams were given an hour on Thursday to film their advert, and a further hour and a half to edit the footage.

As the quality of the teams’ responses was so high, four teams went through instead of three. Apex and The Jocks were the unlucky two to go, leaving Calibre, mBezel, Team Vivacity, and 2 Snakes, a Fox and a Horse to make it to day five.

The four were weeded down to three on Friday when the teams had to present a sales pitch for an event to the bar managers of Alcuin, Derwent, and Vanbrugh. In the end, judges faced a tough decision over putting through Calibre or 2 Snakes, a Fox and a Horse along with mBezel and Team Vivacity; in the end, they gave Calibre a chance, despite finding the team's presentation “disappointing”.

The bar allocation was then decided via a silent auction. Calibre got B Henry’s, mBezel were given V-Bar and Team Vivacity ended up with Derwent Bar.

Calibre are presenting Vibe, an arts and music event featuring The Shambles, Montego Bay, Fatima, Seventh Heaven and Stella Jazz Band. Raffle tickets will be on sale, with a prize of £100 to spend at any shop, bar or restaurant of the winner’s choice.

mBezel have put together a Woodstock Warm Up, featuring performances from DJ Bushby, Dreamz Murphy and Jonny P. Howlie T. Dance Soc will also make an appearance, The Hoff will be signing autographs and The Jocks will showcase a “surprise act”. The event will also feature freebies from Millies, Subway, Evil Eye and Revolution. The mBezel raffle prizes include a Sunday roast for two at 1331, vouchers for coffee and cake at Blue Fly and contemporary silver photo frames.

Last but not least, Vivacity have put together a “Mr York 2009” contest. Contestants include Joe Rankin and Roberto Powell, JCRC Chairs of Derwent and Halifax respectively, Nouse editor Henry James Foy, York Rugby Firsts player Tom Weir, Dan Taylor and Gruffudd Jones. Attendees will be given a vote for every drink they purchase at the event.

The winning team will be the team whose event attracts the largest crowd. With three superb events put together by three fantastic teams, tonight promises to be a close call and an exciting night for campus.
