A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.

Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Yesterday's challenge consisted of hosting an event in a campus bar. Team mBezel held theirs in V-bar, Vivacity in Derwent Bar and Calibre in B Henry's.
Team Calibre, despite having won two of the week's challenges, came third in yesterday's final challenge. The lineup of their event, Vibe, included York's popular improvisation troupe The Shambles, as well as Stella Jazz Band, Montego Bay, Fatima, and Seventh Heaven. A second year Alcuin student at the event said: "It's incredible, I've never seen B Henry's this full!" A number of other attendees confided that they had never otherwise set foot in Alcuin's bar before.
In second position came the all-girls team Vivacity who organised a Mr York election night in Derwent bar. The judging panel included YUM chair Anna Bucks, York student and Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Claire Hazelgrove, and York Come Dancing star Harriet Waghorn.

Anna Bucks jokingly commented: "This is amazing, I can't wait for them to take their clothes off!" Challenges throughout the evening included physical fitness with push-ups, the downing of a pint of beer as well as chat-up lines. Memorable pick-up lines evoked include: "You're ugly but you intrigue me" and "Smile, it's the second best thing you can do with your lips."
Gruffudd Jones won the title of Mr York. He told our correspondant that he felt "very priviledged to have won." Jones added: "This event was very well-organised and there were some good personalities out there."
The winning team of this year's apprentice, mBezel, held their Woodstock warm-up event in Vanbrugh bar. Highlights of mBezel's event included a David Hasselhoff lookalike, DJ Bushby, Dreamz Murphy, Dancesoc as well as Jonny P and Howlie T. There was also a "surprise act by The Jocks", in which the rugby boys stripped off. Correspondant Fiona Lavelle said: "This was definitely the climax of the evening! They stripped down to thongs!"
The winning team was chosen through a combination of raffle ticket sales and head-counts throughout the evening. Having overspent on their bid for Derwent bar, Vivacity came second despite an impressive 290 raffle ticket sales.
Tim Ngwena, YUSU President elect and member of team mBezel said: "it was a very good week, but I'm now very tired and I still have to drive Hasselhoff to the airport!" Cesca Dessain added: "I'm so overwhelmed, I don't know what to say!" Of their rival, Vivacity she said: "They are such a great team, and the whole competition was really tough. I had no idea who was going to win! I'm so happy!"
Of the overall Apprentice event, Henry Coyle, member of York Entrepreneurs and winner of The Apprentice 2008 with Team Vortex, said: "It's been a brilliant event and we've been able to raise over £3000 for charity. This year the competition was twice as long and we were very impressed by the quality of the contestants, who perpetually exceeded our expectations."
