Naked students to invade Micklegate

Friday, 8th June 2007
You may find yourself liable to experience the naked truth today. Once again York Students are joining hundreds in riding through York in the buff, to protest against our dependency on cars.

Naked Ride
Naked truth...no more car dependency

The World Naked Bike Ride begins at 6:00pm tonight starting from Memorial Gardens and will see an invasion of Micklegate during the one hour ride.

Jesse Shust, a York graduate and one of the organizers said: “Last year we had 62 riders, some partially clothed and some fully naked. This year we’re expecting over 100 so riders should become more anonymous.”

The ride hopes to raise awareness of “car culture” and dependency on oil, with its harmful effects on the environment. Now in its second year for York, the 5 mile route will be stewarded by cycle-police at major junctions, although roads will not be completely closed-off.

Shust said: “Last year one or two people found it offensive and covered their eyes and the eyes of their children, which is understandable. But on the whole most people supported the ride. Kids are exposed to bodies being sexualized all the time which is much more dangerous than a friendly, casual ride.”

This year the World Naked Bike Ride organisation is hoping to follow up the ride with more direct action. Part of their campaign is to get York among other cities to have “cycling zones” and two-way cycling lanes.

If you would like to take part in the ride then go to Memorial Gardens at 5:00pm today. Riders do not have to ride fully naked but can wear as much or as little as they like. To find out more contact Jesse Shust himself at 07814 587361. Alternatively visit York Naked Ride.
