York improves in student satisfaction table

Campus
Sunday, 9th August 2009
The University of York was ranked 17th-equal in this year’s National Student Survey, with its satisfaction rating at 89%, up four percentage points from last year.

A University of York spokesman expressed pleasure at the results, saying: "Our performance in the National Student Survey reflects the high quality of teaching and support provided by our staff and the significant investment we continue to make in our facilities.

"The opening of the new Goodricke College later this year, the first building on the expansion to the Heslington Campus, followed by new academic buildings in 2010 will further enhance the student experience at York."

The survey results, published earlier this week, were compiled by England’s higher education funding council. Final-year students were asked to what extent they agreed with the statement "Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of my course". A total of 62% of students nationwide contributed to the survey.

81% of the students surveyed said they were mostly or definitely satisfied with the quality of their course, down one percent from last year. York was one of the biggest risers in the table.

The Medway School of Pharmacy topped this year’s table, achieving a score of 97%. Local rival York St. John University was ranked 104th-equal, with a satisfaction rating of 79%. The University of Lancaster, York’s Roses opponent, was ranked equal with York, alongside Aberdeen, Loughborough, Sheffield and the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama.
