York reaches new high in World University Rankings

Night campus
Thursday, 8th October 2009
The University of York has been ranked 70th equal in the latest Times Higher Education–QS World University Rankings, its highest ever position in the table.

The rankings were published today, with York rising 11 places from last year. Vice-chancellor Brian Cantor expressed delight at the result, saying: "This is a superb outcome which reflects great credit on the commitment of our dedicated staff and the quality of the education that we provide."

Cantor continued: "The University is less than 50 years old, and we have been in the THE-QS world top 100 for several years running. To achieve this level of world recognition in such a short time is exceptional."

York’s overall score in the table was 72.4 out of 100, equal with Utrecht University of the Netherlands. This score is calculated based on reviews from peers and employers, ratios of international faculties, international students and student faculties, and citation data supplied by Scopus.

York’s highest scores for these criteria were its employer review score and its international staff score, which both received 95 out of 100. Their international student score was 83 and their scores for peer reviews, staff/student ratio and citations/staff ratio were 63, 75 and 61 respectively.

The table ranks the leading 500 universities in the world. The infamous Harvard University was ranked first for the sixth consecutive year. Of the 29 UK-based universities that made the top 200, York was ranked 12th highest, between the London School of Economics (placed 67th equal) and the University of Glasgow, which was 79th in the table.

The University of Cambridge, University College London, Imperial College London and the University of Oxford all made the top ten, finishing second, fourth, fifth-equal and fifth-equal respectively.
