ISA By-Elections

ISA elections now open
Friday, 13th November 2009
Voting in the ISA by-elections opened yesterday, but in a change from previous elections the association has decided to allow physical voting only. Ballot boxes were placed in the ISA Office in Wentworth between 10am and 5pm yesterday, and will be there for the same period of time today.

Following problems with ISA elections last term, the positions of President and Treasurer are open in this by-election. Two candidates, Daria Pawlowska and Alexia Salgado, are running for President and three for Treasurer, with Raja Shah Irshad, Niko Lavikainen and Peony Wong all putting themselves forward.

Pawlowska is a Mathematics student from Derwent College. She has served as Derwent's International Representative, and was the ISA European Representative last year. On her Facebook group, she has listed several ideas for improving the ISA; looking at areas such as welfare, internal and external activities, and press and publicity. Salgado is a second-year Economics student from Halifax College; who as part of her campaign has promised to have at least one free party, one trip to Europe and two trips around the UK per term.

Irshad is a first-year ABFM (Accounting, Business, Finance and Management) student from Goodricke College. He was previously treasurer for his student council in college, and his policies include getting more funding for the ISA and being as transparent as possible regarding the association's finances. Lavikainen studies Physics with Business Management, and is currently treasurer for both Photo Soc and the Physics Society. If elected, he wants to negotiate sponsorships and discounts for the ISA, increase collaboration between the ISA and national societies and improve the efficiency and transparancy of ISA finances. Wong is a second-year Psychology student from James College. She is on the Travel Soc committee and is student manager of YSIS (York Students in Schools). Wong wants to see the ISA provide more financial reports, raise funds from sponsorships and ensure wider consultation with international students.

Teoh En Shi is running for Welfare Officer unopposed. He is a Psychology student from Halifax College who promises to always be available when international students need to talk to him.

Of the regional representatives, only two positions - Asian Rep and North American Rep - see more than one candidate running. All the other positions see one student standing, with the exception of Oceania Rep, which no one is running for.

Asian Rep is the most hotly contested position, with four candidates running. Toshi Kawata, a first-year Environment student from Goodricke College, wants to develop students' understanding of different cultures and forge greater links with students from the UK. Anchal Munshi, a second-year Psychology student from James College, promises to ensure all students' views are heard and believes she is able to relate to every international student. Vincent Shuai Yuan is an Economics student from Goodricke College. He wants to have more free events and organise trips to other universities to foster links with their international student associations. Alice Wong is a second-year ABFM student from Vanbrugh College with three main policies - understanding and expressing students' wishes and needs, fighting for the best solutions to these needs and organising events which inform other students about Asian culture.

In the running for North American Rep is Marissa George, a second-year English student from Halifax College. She believes she can represent all the cultural diversity of North America and promises to make sure all ideas or views are voiced. George's opponent is Michael Kirkpatrick, a Wentworth student studying Archaeology. Kirkpatrick is the only candidate who does not have a Facebook group set up as part of his campaign; however, he promises to show up to meetings and try his best to represent all North American students.

Standing for African Rep is Yashica Patel, a second-year Economics student from Halifax College who would like to assure students that she appreciates the different cultures that exist in Africa. Ileana Salloum, a second-year Economics and Politics student also from Halifax, is the only candidate running for European Rep. Salloum is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Political Studies Students.

Dina Salah, a second-year PhD student in the department of Computer Science, is standing for Middle Eastern Rep. Salah was the ISA's Middle Eastern Rep last year. Lenin Jara, an Economics student from Goodricke College, is running for South American Rep. He wants to spread South American culture and bring international students closer to students from the UK.
