The Gallery to remain open despite administration woes

The Gallery nightclub in York is to remain open, despite its owner Luminar Leisure going into administration.

Britain's biggest nightclub owner Luminar, which owns 75 nightclubs, bars and restaurants across the country, had been unable to meet some of its repayment obligations to lenders and was placed into administration on October 28.

The group has reportedly struggled with its debts of over £82 million for many years, which saw its share price slump and lose 98% of its value over the last year.

The smoking ban, the 2005 alcohol licensing laws, which increased competition for nightclubs by extending drinking hours in pubs, and a desire for cheaper entertainment, particularly among students, have been considered to be contributing factors to the company’s decline.

However, Head of Marketing for Luminar Leisure Stephen Lynn revealed that The Gallery, in York, will not be closing as a result of its owner’s struggles.

“As part of the administration process, 11 loss-making clubs in the Luminar estate have been closed – this doesn’t include The Gallery in York,” Lynn said. “The Gallery will continue to provide the residents of York one of the best nights out for the foreseeable future.”

“Ernst & Young have been appointed as Administrators for Luminar, their job is to find a buyer for the company – of which they have received numerous enquiries.”

The Gallery, situated in the historic York Institute building on Friargate, boasts five bars, three rooms and a large gallery and opens every day of the year, except Christmas day.

Until last year, it was the destination for one of YUSU’s official student nights before the student union instead signed a deal with newly refurbished club Tokyo, which was formerly known as Tru and sold at the start of the year by Luminar Leisure.

The Gallery was previously owned by Northern Leisure, which was bought out by Luminar Leisure in a move which made the group the biggest nightclub owners in the country.

Luminar’s nightclubs across the United Kingdom include Ballare in Cambridge, Oceana in Leeds, Exeter’s Arena, Tru in Camberley, and Liquid and Envy in Aberdeen. They provide over 3,000 jobs in total, which employees will hope will be secured by a new ownership deal.
