Derwent JCRC Election results

Derwent DCUK
New Derwent JCRC enthusiastic
Monday, 7th December 2009
After a week of furious campaigning, the results of the Derwent JCRC elections were revealed on Friday night. With everyone gathered in Derwent Bar, the winners were announced amidst a tense atmosphere.

Holly Burton unsurprisingly took the position of Chair, with Ella Berny and Matt Worsfold claiming the Welfare Rep positions. In the newly dual position of Vice-Chair, Emma Warren and Flick Saunders will support Burton this year, aligned with Tom Stilliard, Sarah Triner and Sarah Tillotson as Treasurer and Secretaries respectively.

New Chair, Holly Burton told the Yorker "it felt so good on Friday when I got elected and I'm really looking forward to the next year. It's really daunting when thinking about the year ahead but the committee is so good this year that I'm sure we'll be able to cope with any issues we have to face". She emphasised that one of the main aims of the college is "to start working on a memorial for Ron Weir". More generally, Burton states that she wants "the bar to be filled for the new bar reps’ first bar quiz" and keep Derwent Bar afloat.

Flick and Emma, incoming Vice Chairs are “so pleased to have won” and “can't wait to take office”. They commented that “Anna did an absolutely amazing job last year and so we can't wait to get our Big D committee together to get started on our plans. That is therefore the first thing we hope to do in the New Year. We are hoping to get an even bigger committee together this year so need to get people excited early. We also want to ensure a sufficient system is in place for our freshers to compensate for the loss of our porters.”

The contest for Bar Reps was the closest of the elections, with C-Blockers Freddy, Greg and Duncan coming within 30 votes of Anika Maini, Harriet Evans, Baxter Willis and Max Schrinjen’s winning total. For Ents Reps, Oscar Wimshurst, Megan Harrison, Lauren Thelwell and Sarah McMeekin claimed their places with ease, while Maggie Edwards and Kat Redmond took the RAG Rep positions.

Maggie and Kat told the Yorker that they are “really excited” about their new roles in the college, even more so given the “strong” competition for RAG Reps. They plan to set up a “sub-RAG committee within the college, which will allow other people to get involved with planning events and fundraising within Derwent” (as well as “making outfits for our college for the R.A.G parade” in week 5 of next term).

Sam Rowley took Webmaster; Mike Davies, LGBT; Charlotte Jackson and Matt Jenkins, Sponsorship and Conor Scanlan and Neil Chauhan, Vis Ents. Eden’s Court will the represented by Alex Nock and Tom Hartley this year, with Tash Cutts and Alex Miles claiming the two Ordinary Member posts and Rob Cazaciuc and Jan Vohryzek taking International. With Jamie Criswell and Dan Crehen as Press and Publicity Reps, Sarah Harris and Ellie Chalk as Merch Reps and Milly Carlson and Amy Robertson claiming Student Action, this year’s JCRC looks to be one to watch closely.
