Alcuin JCRC 09/10 Announced

Alcuin Logo
Saturday, 12th December 2009
Last night at B’Henrys, the newly elected Alcuin JCRC was announced amongst an excited and enthusiastic crowd. The college bar was filled with Alcuinites waiting in anticipation to see who had been successful in securing their positions.

Written by Darius McQuaid

Ollie Todd has taken over the role of JCR Chair. Ollie was running unopposed which he told the Yorker was disappointing as he would much ‘rather have had someone to run against’, even if he ran the risk of losing in the polls! Ollie still received 210 votes in his favor showing strong support for the new chair. Ollie believes his reasons for winning came from his role as Ordinary Officer on last year's JCRC and his involvement in a lot of different JCRC activities, from fighting to save the college bar to organizing the Alcuin summer ball.

Ollie ran with a straightforward campaign and simple policies that are relevant to the students of Alcuin such as maintaining good welfare and support, promoting their bar and events, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly. However, Ollie has already addressed specific issues for his new team on the JCRC. This year with the help of Treasurer, Andrew Theodosiou, he wants to ensure that college funds are spent appropriately and that the summary of the college spending is available to students. As Ollie told the Yorker ‘it’s their money after all.’

He wishes to put an important emphasis on bringing the college together socially through more events, as block mentality has been seen as a social constraint on Alcuin students. As Ollie said ‘I'd like to improve our college socials, I don't think there were enough last year. We should be organizing more trips into town and cheap nights out to Leeds.’

The new JCRC seems to be well equipped with experienced members. Andy Chan, a Bar representative last year, won position of Vice Chair for Business and Services. Ben Ward won Vice Chair of Welfare and Support with a landslide victory over Shannon Kavanagh. Emily Russel is now Secretary with a close win over Thomas Carter. As mentioned above Andrew Theodosiou, Treasuer, won a narrow victory over Jamal Senouci.

The night ended with a short video on Alcuin events from this term and last year giving a warm and uplifting atmosphere to the night. The new JCRC seemed already well acquainted and united with one another, ready to tackle college problems and improve spirits within the various lettered blocks of Alcuin College.
