Army lends students assault choppers and M16s

"The Heist"...students in army helicopters

Most students carry a notepad and cheese sandwich to work. Not so with Nezih Savaskan and Andrew Fensom, two York students who have convinced the army to lend them assault choppers, glocks, machine guns, 5mm handguns and M16s.

The film-making soc duo have embarked on filming the first action-thriller made in the university - " The Heist".

Co-producer Nezih Savaskan said: "We just wrote them a letter and that was it. Student actors are going to be handling the guns and in the choppers with an army supervisor to hand. They've been really good about it."

Currently the film-making team are operating without any funding but are still confident they can finish the film. Heavily influenced by films such as "Heat", "Collateral" and "Ocean's 11" the 20-minute film is described as a high-octane thrill-ride.

Savaskan said: "You can expect a thrill ride with lots of adrenaline. It's about a highly-trained team of criminals who try to break into a security complex of a technology company."

The film will be screened in City Screen just before Christmas this year. Students will be able to buy DVD of the film or download it from the internet.

Savaskan and Fensom are both members of film-making society and plan to go on into film-making next year. Fensom is moving to Singapore to work in the media while Savaskan will be doing a masters in music technology.
