University urged to sign up to 10:10

10:10
Friday, 5th February 2010
By Daphne Barkshire

10:10, a national campaign, is gaining momentum within the University of York, as its students urge the University to show leadership in the fight against climate change and environmental destruction.

10:10 is a campaign addressed at individuals and institutions, urging us to individually reduce our carbon emissions by 10% in 2010, in a collective effort to reduce the U.K’s emissions by 10:10. York City Council, the Minster and YUSU are fully pledged and the University now remains to make the commitment. YUSU Environment and Ethics Officer, David Clarke, asserts that “the important thing for us is that the commitment is concrete. 10:10 offers the University the opportunity to make a very public pledge which can unite staff and students in an effort to reduce emissions”.

On Tuesday 26th January, YUSU Environment and Ethics, with the aid of People & Planet, hosted an event labeled ‘10:10 at the Courtyard’, in an effort to raise further awareness about the campaign. Passers by were able to join the photographic petition to the university, by having their picture taken with a large 10:10 sign. Furthermore, they were offered a ‘User’s Guide to 10:10’, free energy saving light bulbs and those who showed up wearing ten jumpers won a free goodie bag.
