Fairtrade Fortnight

People and Planet
Friday, 5th March 2010
This week, University of York People and Planet are taking action to raise awareness of Fairtrade.

Across the country every year organisations and charities, the media and shops take two weeks in February and March to promote Fairtrade products and gather public awareness of the movement and issues surrounding trade.

Megan Preston, Secretary of University of York People and Planet describes the fortnight as useful in increasing “public awareness and thinking about trade justice and poverty”.

The fortnight is coordinated by the Fairtrade Foundation that aims at reducing exploitation in trade and creating stable enough conditions for farmers to continue their work. This year's Fairtrade Fortnight began on the 22nd February and will continute until 7th March.

Week 8 is when it’s all happening here on campus. On Monday, University of York People and Planet held a panel debate on "what is trade fairness?", "is free trade fair?" and "does Fairtrade really make a difference?" They gathered speakers from diverse societies across campus and from the Fairtrade Foundation UK and York Fairtrade Forum. Society speakers were from the Socialist Worker’s Party society and University of York Freedom Society. All members of the panel argued their cases for and against the concept of Fairtrade, and Preston told the Yorker, “there was a great turnout” and all the speakers were “excellent”. Check out other Fairtrade Fortnight events around York and York St John's below.

Nationally, the theme for Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 is “The Big Swap”. People are encouraged to subsititude regular products they usually buy for Fairtrade alternatives. Interested? Visit the website at www.fairtrade.org.uk/thebigswap and pledge to swap items such as as tea, coffee, wine, rice or sugar for a Fairtrade equivalent.
