The University of York reports a healthy interest in its Open Days and prospectuses from prospective students, despite the prospect of increasing tuition fees.

Interest among prospective students and their families in the University’s summer Open Day next month has already outstripped the figures for the last two years, even against the background of the Government’s new funding structure for higher education.

5,189 students and nearly 5,100 family members booked to attend the Open Day on 6 July – 1,051 more people than attended last summer’s event and 2,186 more than in 2009.

The University is due to hold another Open Day on 1 October 2011.

The most significant change is in the number of family members accompanying prospective students to Open Days. This has increased by more than 719 this year compared to 2010.

Requests for 2012 prospectuses are also showing a strong performance particularly at Higher Education fairs across the country. At one recent Higher Education fair in Manchester, 2,000 copies were snapped up in less than 24 hours.

The University’s recruitment teams have also staged nine taster days which attracted 420 students from 16 schools and colleges, and a further 25 schools have visited campus with more visits lined up for later this term.

The University’s Registrar, Dr David Duncan, said: “It’s early days yet but we’re extremely pleased by the strong interest in our Open Days and the take-up of our 2012 prospectus. It shows that prospective students are interested in coming to a University of proven quality."

"It is a reflection of the strength of our reputation for first-rate teaching and a rewarding student experience, both of which we intend to maintain and enhance.”

That's so weird. It's almost like those people who come to York could already pay their student fees...
