York students to perform at BAFTA

BAFTA
Thursday, 13th May 2010
Students from the university’s department of Theatre, Film and Television will appearing in a series of comedy sketches at the British Academy of Film, Television and Arts.

The aim of the event is to showcase the talent of University of York students to an audience of distinguished members of the film and television industry.

The event will be hosted by the University’s chancellor Greg Dyke who himself has played an active part in the British television industry over the last few decades. The head of department Professor Andrew Tudor said in the university press release that ‘now is an ideal moment to showcase the Department’s achievements and look forward to its exciting future’.

3rd year PhD student Nik Morris helped to produce the promotional video which will be screened at the event. He talked of the ‘great opportunity that this has provided’ due to the film being shown to such an ‘influential audience’.

£24m has been invested in the department, to provide it with a state of the art scenic stage theatre, a black box theatre, a screening room and professional TV broadcast studios with audio and editing equipment suites. The department will move to its new facilities in September of this academic year.

The department is privileged with strong connections to the media industry, having had visits from people such as Anthony Horowitz, Penelope Wilton, Samuel West and Alan Ayckbourn. In gaining York’s TFTV department a higher profile in the industry, we hope that this event means that there will be much more to come.

it's a little bit terrifying that despite all the university's debt problems it can invest £24m in a department with only 15 staff. that's £160,000 per staff member - including those who run the office...
