Police search house in Claudia case

Claudia Lawrence
Thursday, 27th May 2010
Written by Grace Redhead

A “recent development” in the hunt for the missing Claudia Lawrence has led police to a house in Ellerton, East Yorkshire, where they combed the residence and its surroundings over 24 and 25 May.

The operation involved twenty officers, including “an underwater search team, who searched culverts which form part of the property”, and saw items being taken from the house for forensic analysis. A spokeswoman said that as yet no arrests had been made as a result of the search.

It is the latest location to be scoured in the 14 month investigation following Lawrence’s disappearance last March, which has seen police comb several houses and a pub. In March “the Outgang”, which borders the university sports fields and Halifax College, was searched, but it was later stated that nothing of significance was found.

Initial inquiries into Lawrence’s background soon after her disappearance revealed the chef, who worked at the Roger Kirk centre, to have had a complex private life which included affairs with married or attached men. The search has been frustrated by the unwillingness of Lawrence’s past partners to come forward, said the head investigative officer Ray Galloway, who expressed disappointment at their “reluctance to be candid”.

Six weeks after Lawrence went missing the investigation into her disappearance was reclassified from a missing person’s case to a suspected murder enquiry.
