Uni U-turn on cutting welfare votes

Thursday, 11th October 2007
The university has done a u-turn on threatening to cut YUSU welfare out of the student support committee, one of the most influential committees affecting student life. Now the university says that Academic and Welfare Officer Grace Fletcher-Hall can retain her seat on the cabinet.

Brian Cantor
Brian Cantor was accused of 'blackmail' in the voting row

The replacement of the old Student Support Committee with the new Student Services group led to outcry by YUSU members after they were told that it would also lead to the loss of key welfare votes.

The expected loss of such an important vote outraged committee members when the topic was discussed at YUSU Senate.

YUSU Ents Rep, Rory Shanks accused Vice-Chancellor, Brian Cantor of 'blackmail' in June after Rich Croker, ex-YUSU president announced the predicament.

Cantor had reportedly told YUSU they either had to accept a non-voting position or the committee would be collapsed and replaced. This would also have allowed the committee to call a closed session on some matters, which would have excluded the President and then Academic and Welfare Officer, Amy Foxton from discussion.

It has now been confirmed that YUSU do hold two voting positions on the new Student Services group, which will fall to Grace Fletcher-Hall and President Anne-Marie Canning.

Outrage was voiced at the time from current President, Canning as well as college representatives and both sabbatical, and non-sabbatical officers.

The Committee's remit covers both welfare areas, including accommodation and study as well services issues including college bars.
