YUM Chair to be removed from Union Council

YUM YUSU
YUM no longer...
Monday, 25th October 2010
On Wednesday October 20th, a proposal was passed by the Union Council to remove YUM Chair from membership of the Council, and YUM as a sub committee of reach of the Council.

Then YUM Chair Chris Young argued that the role of YUM Chair on the Union Council upheld “freedom of press”, and that being represented by the Student Activities Officer would be a conflict of interest, as the media would be “restricted in their ability” to hold their representing Officer “to account”.

However, others viewed the role of YUM Chair as one that represents the “4/5 societies in YUM”, giving them an “unfairly favoured presence over other societies.”

According to YUSU President Tim Ngwena, who put forward the proposal, the motion sought to “address the conflict of interest between the existence and representation of a group that clearly publishes material as a press and media basis and the political integrity that is needed when holding officers and members of council to account.”

“As it stands, Union Council can pass policy and impose it on YUM, a clear threat to their freedom of speech,” added Ngwena.

A motion on the official removal of YUM and YUM Chair from Union Council will be put forward during the coming UGM to officially amend the YUSU constitution on this matter.
