The York Apprentice 2011 begins

the apprentice
Monday, 30th May 2011
The York Apprentice 2011 kicked off on Monday, with the first task challenging teams’ blagging skills as they collected items for an auction.

The day began early with a briefing for all twenty competing teams, which included two teams of first years, at 8.30am.

The day’s task was to collect items which would be sold at an auction later in the day and each team could submit two lots, each of up to three items.

Items could be bought but the teams who blagged them for the cheapest amount, or even free, would benefit the most as the five teams with the lowest overall profit after the auction would be eliminated.

All lots had to be handed in to the York Entrepreneur Society by 4pm and just over an hour later, the auction, which teams were not allowed to attend, took place.

Over 50 people attended and lots included a computer, a bike and a black card, and a total of more than £1,000 was raised overall. The most expensive lots on offer were a holiday, which sold for £250, and a phone, which raised £202.

Paradigm and Econ Boys were the two most successful teams as they earned profits of £254 and £202 respectfully.

This will see them gain an advantage in tomorrow’s task, which organiser Sophie Walker was unwilling to reveal.

However, Walker did say that “the day went really, really well. Everyone was really enthusiastic and hard working.”

“It got very rushed at 4pm when everyone came in with all their lots but I’m really proud of how much we made and the teams that got through really deserved it,” she added.

Instead of the expected five teams, only four were eliminated as one team was disqualified earlier in the day.

The Windows only managed one lot, which resulted in them raising £5 overall. This was matched by the Apprenteneurs, seeing them both leave the competition, along with Business As Usual and Encore.

The Yorker’s Stef Neylon is competing for Team Sheen, which has progressed to the next round, and she said “I’ve enjoyed today but it’s been unbelievably hard.”

“We really struggled as it was a bank holiday” Neylon added, as her team found many shops closed or unable to help due to absent managers.

Team Sheen’s lots included meal vouchers for Olive Tree and Plonkers, as well as a Hilton Hotel bathrobe.

Tomorrow morning sees another early start for the remaining fifteen teams as they meet at 8.30am once more to take on their next task.
