University to host Liberal Democrat National Party Hustings

The University of York has been announced as the host of the Liberal Democrat National Party Hustings. This will mark the only time the hustings will take place at a University, and the only event of its kind in the Yorkshire and Humber region. The event will also be the last hustings before the ballot closes.

The event has been organised by the University of York Liberal Democrat Society and will see two candidates fight for the position of party president. These will be Tim Farron, the MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, and Susan Kramer, the former MP for Richmond Park. The election will decide the president, whose main role it will be to represent the views of the party membership to the leader.

James Whiteside, chair of the Liberal Democrat Society said: “It’s of national importance, and we are all very excited to have two great speakers coming to make their arguments.”

However many expect that the Liberal Democrats may not receive such a warm welcome. During the 2010 election campaign Liberal Democrats campaigned to scrap tuition fees but now have reversed their stance in accordance to the coalition government with the Conservatives, which will mean a cap on University Tuition Fees at £9000 a year. A student who voted for the Liberal Democrats in the 2010 elections told the Yorker: “I’m honestly really disappointed with the Lib Dems. I really thought they meant change and now I’ve just become apathetic with all the main political parties. I’m going to the hustings tonight and I’ll be sure to let them know how I feel.”

The Hustings will take place at 6.30pm tonight in the physics block.
