Week 4 ushered in this term’s Volunteering Week for York University students. From Monday to Saturday there have been numerous events promoting the volunteering opportunities students can get involved in. With the week coming to an end, there have been many success stories.

Monday kicked off volunteering week with an open committee meeting in Langwith. On Tuesday there was the volunteering fair in James Hall where several outside organisations were invited to give information about their projects, as well as the Careers Service and YUSU Volunteering Projects as well.

Wednesday gave York Students the opportunity to attend training sessions preparing volunteers for some of the upcoming projects such as working with vulnerable adults and working with children.

On Thursday in Vanbrugh there were project co-ordinators giving talks providing information about the volunteering projects coming up this term. In the evening the ‘Kids’ themed fundraiser took place in McQ’s bar. Everyone was welcome to attend and enjoy vodka jelly, party games, Cheesy Pop Soc DJs and a special Volunteering Cocktail.

The V-inspired V-bus parked outside James College on Friday. The bus was a double- decker information centre. On the bus you could also get advice on how to put volunteering on your CV. There was also the Graduate and International Students Information Drop In, so all students could have the necessary information and opportunities to volunteer.

Finally on Saturday was the final event of the week with the Mega College Challenge. The challenge will be helping to clear land in the cemetery on Cemetery Road that has been there since Victorian times.

Hannah Brearley, YUSU volunteering officer told the Yorker: “Volunteering week has been incredibly successful. All our events have been well attended, and some have been so full we’ve had to schedule repeats in weeks 6 and 7.” Many events such as the training sessions drew large crowds, with expected turnouts of only 30 actually being over 100 students. She goes onto say that volunteering is: “fun, rewarding and a great way to meet new people,” and she “would recommend it to anyone.”

If you want to get involved go to:YUSU Volunteering to find out about all the upcoming projects.
