University Careers Service launches “Make the Most of” campaign

A new ‘Make The Most Of’ campaign is being launched by the Careers Service to encourage students to get more work experience before they leave.

Following the recent recession, many graduate jobs have become more difficult to acquire. Rachel Fish, a student at the university who hopes to enroll in the navy when she graduates said: “I think it’s going to be a lot harder to get in to the navy and my chances of getting in may have decreased”.

“Students can’t get jobs after graduating now; it’s difficult even to get part time jobs”. However, the Careers Service offers guidance to students through the increasingly competitive world outside of the university.

Liz Smith, Director of the Careers Service said, “A degree isn’t enough on its own, and if students engage with the Careers Service earlier, we can help them to develop their skills and experience throughout their time at University, rather than leaving it until right at the end”.

Gayle Johnson, Operations Manager adds, “The Careers Service provides advice and guidance on many different things, including work opportunities and experience, free training skills courses, project management, further study, volunteering projects in schools and information about specific careers”.

The Careers Service can help students to find internships and paid work experience placements through their website and the Student Internship Bureau. There are also 4 Careers Fairs this term focusing on Education, Finance and Management, Science and Technology and Law, and there will be other events, including a journalism workshop in the spring term.

Interested in getting work experience? Click here to access their website, add them on Facebook or visit the Careers Service building near Vanbrugh College opposite the library, which is open Monday to Friday 10am- 5pm to find out more.
