International Students’ Association Hustings: Open Door For All

Friday, 20th May 2011
Whilst many of the student body may believe that this year’s elections are long since over, there are still important decisions to be made.

This Friday, 20th May, sees voting open for positions within the International Students’ Association.

Wednesday evening saw a large group of enthusiastic candidates and members gather to kick-start proceedings with the hustings event. The issue that came up again and again? Integration with national students.

Across the many different social roles that the ISA encompasses, there was a great focus on a push for inclusion of all groups, including home students. The idea is that many of the nationals themselves have not experienced world cultures primarily, but there is a consensus that a majority may not have explored their own country and culture all too much.

Of course, the ISA remains at heart a home group for a large group of York university students that come from a diverse plethora of heritages.

There is hope of greater integration into and liaison with the main activity bodies of the university so as to bridge any remaining gaps between associations and internationals; particularly with the introduction of UK, International and Sport reps, for example.

Indeed, there has been a reforming of the way in which the association body is formed for these elections. The president of the committee, Leslie Tay, talked to The Yorker about such changes and revealed his hopes and ambitions for his remaining time as the authority figure.

“‘Association’ is a key word in our programme,” he began. “We want to associate with more societies and with more students."

"This is part of the reasoning behind our introduction of a UK rep, to better integrate the home student. It provides the home students a voice and allows them to question what we do. Moreover, UK rep is a first point of contact for foreign students who arrive at the University of York and will be fundamental over the summer break and Freshers' periods as a figure to represent the group on the ground."

Tay also highlighted the importance of better services, better campaigns, raising awareness and a focus on how cuts affect the lives and applications of international students.

The programme to tackle is certainly interesting and wide-ranging: more images of the international student will demonstrate to the majority how they impact and add to our daily university life.

Concluding, The Yorker was given three key aims for Tay’s remaining term: “Integration, transparency, participation”. There is a distinct feel that this is a time for all members of the university to reach out and share in our various backgrounds.

Below is a short interview with both Vice-President candidates, followed by a summary of aims from other candidates. Voting runs from Friday 20th until Wednesday 25th May.
