York students stage sit-in protest

The Great York Sit-in
The Great York Sit-in
Thursday, 2nd December 2010
Yesterday, York university students began a 15 day sit-in protest to demonstrate against the rise in tuition fees.

Around 30 students have gathered in the Exhibition centre with supplies such as food, sleeping bags and laptops. They are following the course of action that has been taken at many other institutions across the country, the most well-known of which being University College London (UCL); UCL students have been threatened with legal action if they do not leave the building soon.

Participants Tara Jessop and Luke Capps said that they were "calling on the university to support us in condemning the education reforms". One of the demands being made by the peaceful protesters is that the university issues a written statement "in strong opposition to the conclusions and substance of the Browne report on higher education" and that they "take the lead in encouraging other universities and relevant institution to do the same".

Many students passing by have taken in interest to the action, and are encouraged to sign a petition. The sit-in students are also holding meetings, workshops, teach-ins and speaker events to occupy their time, while trying to spread their message and get more people involved.

The students have succeeded in keeping the Exhibition Centre open during their daily 24-hour sit-in, and as yet have not been forcibly removed. However, the building is not covered by 24-hour portering, so security is patrolling at regular intervals during the night to ensure the safety of the students.

Feel strongly against the rise in tuition fees? Join the Facebook event here and head on down to the exhibition centre to join what's being called the "Great York Sit-in".

It's a shame that this wasn't publicised more. I didn't hear anything about arrangements for a Sit-In Protest before it actually started, so it was too late to get involved. If there are more planned, it would be great to hear about it around campus, I'm sure many more students would get in on it.

Gillian, the occupation is carrying on 24hrs a day till at least the end of term. Please pop down any time you like to sign the petition, find out what's going on and make yourself at home with a sleeping bagif you are inclined to do so. Everyone is really friendly and I can assure you that you will be more than welcome! Hope to see you soon.

'The Great York Sit-in' ... An opportunity for students to brave the elements and make a stand... oh wait, no, stay in a warm building sleeping and doing nothing productive. AND getting in the way of an area I like to use pre lectures to do work. Well done chaps.
