Students terrorised in Tang Hall

Tang Hall
Tang Hall
Sunday, 5th December 2010
A group of local youths tried to force entry into a student house this week in Tang Hall.

An IG student property on Constantine Avenue in Tang Hall has been consistently targeted by local youths who also live on the street. Since the beginning of term the youths have been throwing stones at the house and the students living there. The harassment has been steadily increasing when it culminated this week when they tried to force the door open by violently kicking it.

The house is rented through IG property, who made a conscious decision not to warn the students about the group of local youths before moving in. The previous group of students living in the property had the same problems, but when the current students living there now were showed the property by IG they did not inform them of the problem, nor did the landlord. They were only told when they first moved in.

The police have been called on numerous occasions but it has not had an effect on the situation as the problem is ongoing. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "We take all incidents of anti-social behaviour very seriously and our Safer Neighbourhood Teams work closely with partner agencies to tackle the issue in our communities. One of the students living in the property, a third year biology student told The Yorker “we have informed the University’s student welfare team of the situations and the difficulties it is putting us in, both socially and academically.” With incidents caused by the youths happening 3 or 4 times a week the students feel that their studies are being constantly disrupted and put on hold.

The third year biology student went onto say “on Saturday night (27th November) the abuse continued and increased in severity. We had to make an emergency 999 call to the police after the youths tried to force entry into the property. Subsequent to this I left a message on the IG answer machine detailing the incident and requesting the other key for the front door so that we could ensure the security of the property and our possessions as well as our own safety. By 11am on Monday morning I had still received no response I find it appalling, given the severity of the situation that nobody got back in contact with me immediately on the Monday morning.”

The students believe the response from IG property has not been helpful, when they sent a letter to IG explaining a similar incident that happened earlier in the term they responded with the advice to confront the youths and firmly tell them to go away. The students living in the house told The Yorker that they feel “this advice is completely irresponsible considering that the police have explicitly told us not to confront the youths.”

The problem is still ongoing and the students have now contacted the council for help. The North Yorkshire Police spokesman told The Yorker "It is important that our residents feel safe and secure in their homes and if anyone would like to discuss a specific issue they can contact their local policing team on 0845 60 60 24 7."

Unacceptable response from IG - sounds like they couldn't be any less helpful.

It's sad that local youths have nothing better to do than bother students. How pathetic.

Yet another example of the local hate culture against students. This sounds like consistent harassment and shouldn't be tolerated. Why don't the police take action, like fining the parents of these youths or prosecuting them? It's the only way these people will ever stop.

Good old ConstantFear Avenue. About 5 years ago my mate was living there and some youths posted absolutely loads of lit fireworks through the letter box. Lovely area

I'm glad that my cleaner in first year told me to avoid there.
