Your:Books to close after web sales boom

Books
Blackwells is to offer a new second-hand book service
Saturday, 27th October 2007
The Students' Union has announced that Your:Books, the second-hand book shop on campus, is due to close at the end of the spring term.

Your:Books has lost many customers in recent years as online second-hand book services such as Amazon Marketplace have become increasingly popular with students.

Matt Burton, YUSU Services and Finance Officer, made the announcement at the Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday. He said: “The business has just about managed to break even over the past few years, but turnover has decreased to a point where any further decline would result in us losing money for the Union."

Your:Books has found that it is unable to compete with online book sellers, who often offer lower prices as well as a home delivery service.

Its sales have also been hit by the move by many academic departments to rely more on electronic resources, such as eBooks and eJournals.

After Your:Books has closed, YUSU will allow students to buy and sell second-hand books on its website. Burton said: “Ultimately we should end up with a better, more accessible system that students can use any time, day or night, with ease.”

The closure of Your:Books will also see Blackwell's Book Shop in Market Square expanding its trade to second-hand books.

Your:Books has been serving students for over 20 years.
