Admin force students to pay extra parking fees

Clamped car
The University's parking policy is famously swift
Sunday, 28th October 2007
Students are being forced to pay four years of parking fees for a three year course.

Some adult nursing students began their course in March but due to administration parking permits must be renewed every October.

As a result adult nurses are paying twice to drive onto campus during their first year of study. A permit for the academic year 2006/7 costs £35.

Those who began their course in March are now on placement at various hospitals around North Yorkshire. Vicky Wilber, an adult nurse who started in October, claimed a friend who enrolled in March had labelled the policy “despicable.”

She said: “Because they pay for it in March it should last a year from then, it’s not their fault that their course starts in March.

“She’s got to come in and renew it. It is a big amount if it becomes £70 for a year and they’ve got to pay for their parking permit for wherever they’re on placement as well.”

The issue was raised in YUSU senate after several students complained and some union officers claimed that their parking fees were worked out pro rata.

The “Sustainable Transport Plan” states: “The University’s transport year extends from 01 October to 30 September. All permits must be renewed for each transport year.” The City of York Council capped car parking at the University at 1520 spaces in 1999 and 700 students currently have parking permits.

It is believed that student union representatives discussed the glitch with Security and Support Services, who are responsible for parking policy enforcement. A University spokesman said that parking fees are constantly under review to ensure a fair system.

The spokesman said: "This is one of a number of issues relating to travel, transport and parking which are now under consideration as the University develops a Sustainable Travel Plan that is fair to all students and staff."

First year adult nurse Amanda Bellboddy added: “I understand why they’re unhappy but from my personal point of view it’s hard to sympathise.

“I’ve got two kids and if I’d started in March having children means I could have claimed tax credit but I can’t because of the way the tax year falls. If I was them I’d have a whinge though.”
