The University of York will welcome 3,400 new Home and International undergraduate students for the next academic year, starting in October 2011.

Competition for places was fierce, with the university receiving 25,500 applications for its 3,400 places; this meant there were eight candidates for each place.

After ‘A’ level results were released in England on Thursday, August 18, the university participated in the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) clearing system to finalise its available places.

David Garner, Senior Press Officer for the University of York, said: “We have a target undergraduate intake (Home/EU & International) of 3,400 students. We were out of clearing by mid-afternoon yesterday.”

York had only 70 places to offer in clearing this year in contrast to the 220 available in 2010.

However, many students struggled to sort out their grades as quickly as they had hoped after the UCAS track and clearing websites crashed and were down for several hours due to the large volume of visitors to the sites after grades were announced.

This concludes a process which has seen university applications across the country soar by 2.5% to reach a record high of over 400,000, according to UCAS, as students try to start their degrees before tuition fees rise to £9,000 in September 2012.

New students at the University of York will be able to apply for their accommodation from Monday, August 22 and will move to campus for the start of term on October 10.
