Reports have been released on York Extra which reveal that students have been approached by members of the religious organisations.

The university has asked students who have been approached by the group to come forward, and has issued warnings to those who know someone who may be easily persuaded to join.

One internet writer, Steve Rausch, who claims he managed to avoid being absorbed into the 'International Church of Christ', says: "If they can pull me into their cult, I don't think it's arrogant of me to assume they're capable of leading many others astray." He is one of many people who write about their experiences of the cults on internet sites to warn others.

The 'Children of God', also known as 'The Family', has been subject to much press attention, with the group having to admit to a series of child abuse scandals in the 1990s, which it rectified by excommunicating convicted members.

Statistics revealed by the 'Children of God' in 2005 listed 10,202 members worldwide. One of the largest anti-cult groups, including 'FREECOG' (Free the Children of God) have consistently campaigned against them.

The group was formed in America in 1969 by David Berg - a man their website also refers to as "Father David", or "Moses David". He died in 1994.

A 'cult' is a religious organisation that is seen to use psychological mind games to manipulate members.

"One of the largest anti-cult groups, including 'FREECOG' (Free the Children of God) is now owned by the Church of Scientology."

I find this statement very ironic.

I got approached by this woman on the walkway between biology and vanbrugh about a fortnight ago. She, out of the blue, asked me whether I believed in god, what the meaning of life was, and so on amongst other irrelevent questions until I made an excuse and left her.

Very strange.

I wonder if she was one of these.

anonymous: why do you think those questions are irelevent?
