SCOOP opens on campus

scoop
Wednesday, 8th June 2011
This term has seen the opening of SCOOP, the University of York student co-operative, after nearly two years of planning and working on the project.

The non-profit organisation now has a shop that is open every Wednesday from 10am until 6pm in Wentworth room W/021.

It sells a wide variety of basic foods such as flour, sugar, spices, pasta and rice, as well as student-friendly vegetable boxes and snacks such as chocolate, fruit and nuts.

All food is sold at cost price, and aims to be locally sourced, fairly traded or organic.

SCOOP member Phoebe Cullingworth says that SCOOP ‘is perfect for students on a budget, but with a mind for the ethics of what they buy.’

She hopes that in the future it will become a community with personal links to local suppliers, as well as a place to for people to discuss their values about food, and to hold debates about related things such as organic farming and Fairtrade produce.

The idea originally came from a member of the People and Planet society, and has taken two years to come to fruition.

After being turned away by YUSU who said that they could not help, the students approached the university directly to ask for office space on campus, and proved that they were knowledgeable and determined, as well as popular among other students.

It then grew from a small shop in someone’s cupboard at home to a society in its own right, and in the future hopes to be open every day of the week.
