Students hold ‘Disability Awareness Week’

disabilities 2
Friday, 24th June 2011
This week has seen a range of events take place at the University of York to raise awareness of disabilities among students.

Students, whether disabled or not, were encouraged to come along and learn about the daily experiences of disabled fellow students.

A wide range of disabilities were represented, ranging from autism to deafness to mental health issues.

There was a talk led by students with disabilities, and also a talk from a member of the NUS Disabled Students’ Campaign, Matt Bond.

There was also the opportunity to become involved in disability activism through a meeting of the Disabled Students’ Network.

The week ended with a film viewing of ‘The King's Speech’, which focuses on King George VI of Britain, who suffered from a stammer.

This is the first time that an event like this has taken place at the university, with the idea coming from Sean Ahlstrom, Goodricke’s JCRC Disability Rep.

Liam Haakon Smith, YUSU’s Disabled Student Officer, said that he hoped the week would encourage people to "try harder to listen and not make assumptions about other people"

When asked what could be done to improve the disabled students’ experience at university, he said that making people aware that different people have different needs "would help to reduce the stigma around asking for adjustments to lectures or exams".

He emphasised the importance of having greater awareness of why some students get accommodations so that "those who need help would feel more able to ask for it".
