New alumni network programmes to help York graduates boost careers

sunset york
Thursday, 14th July 2011
The University of York is launching two related programmes, University of York Professional Networks and Yorkspace.net, to better connect this generation’s alumni with one another and with current students.

The programmes, which will kick off during the autumn term, will see the commencement of three networks. The initial networks are Finance, Banking, Law and Management, which will be launched at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Embankment Place, London; Media, Broadcasting, Journalism and PR, which will launch at BAFTA, Piccadilly, London; and The Third Sector, which will launch at the King’s Place, King’s Cross, London.

These are high profile launch events, which will be hosted by leading industry figures, and will be an opportunity for alumni to connect and discover professional opportunities.

The events will take place in November and will be free to attend by all of this year’s graduates.

Additional networking opportunity for graduates based in York will be available on July 28 at a networking event at the Biltmore Bar and Grill from 7.30pm. As with the other events, this event is free for all graduates to attend.

According to Alumni Engagement Manager Nik Miller, the University of York Professional Networks is designed to “promote links between alumni in specific profession areas.”

“A key objective of the professional networks is to connect alumni with current students to support employability,” said Miller.

“We are encouraging alumni to support current students by offering informal advice, internships and careers talks on campus,” He continued.

At the start of the new academic year, students will also be able to search a directory of alumni online and message relevant contacts for professional advice and support.

Furthermore, the new website Yorkspace.net will underpin these professional networks and all alumni engagement work. Yorkspace will act as a portal for graduates to access social and professional networking opportunities, events, York email for life, discounts, news and careers support.

“There is a strong focus at the moment on providing benefits for younger alumni: the combination of the professional networks and Yorkspace provides recent graduates with opportunities to boost their career progression by making valuable professional connections, and will also promote links between alumni and current students,” concluded Miller.

The University has a network of alumni that comprisies over 85,000 graduates in more than 177 countries.

I like this as an idea,I currently feel there is a biased towards people who 'know-someone' in terms of work experience intern-ship and in some cases jobs. This I feel pushes towards doing something positive rather than moaning about how some people get all the chance. Maybe it'll make a difference to job prospects, maybe it won't! however I'm a little sad to see the science subjects are not involved :(
