Poster rules create uproar

central hall
Saturday, 22nd October 2011
Over 170 students at the University of York have signed an online petition after being angered by a ban on postering and flyering across campus.

The e-petition, entitled ‘Repeal the ban on campus postering’, has received 178 signatures since being set up only a couple of weeks ago after students reacted to the postering and flying ban which will see societies and clubs unable to advertise on campus.

Angry comments on the e-petition include “poster publicity is an integral element of the innovative promotion of campus arts and performance. Banning it criminalises student initiative and enthusiasm” and “seems absolutely nonsensical to stop poster advertising, especially since it's peak time for the new freshers to be joining up to societies, and without the posters campus is impersonal and dull”.

Commenting on the issue, YUSU President Tim Ellis said: “The university has always had restrictions on postering since about 10 years ago at least, but they have never been enforced. They are now deciding to enforce them properly.

Quote I think the postering ban could be quite damaging to a lot of societies and groups Quote
Tim Ellis, YUSU President

“The university was wanting us to fine people putting up posters etc but we obviously refused to do this. We want to try and work out a reasonable solution with the university about how we can go about getting this issue sorted.

“I think the postering ban could be quite damaging to a lot of societies and groups. It is something that is being brought up in the Student Development Assembly next Tuesday. I hope that we will have a lot of the affected societies coming along and helping to draw up an effective plan of action to how we can resolve this.

“I would like to see a large number of regulated postering boards around campus. I feel such a system would be a much better alternative environmentally and financially but the direction we take will depend on the outcome of Tuesday.”

On his YUSU blog, James Croydon, Student Activities Officer, said: “The university estates team has decided to massively crack down on postering and flyering across campus. I personally disagree with this and intend to try and persuade the university to see the many benefits to postering and flyering to both the students and the university itself.”

However, the University of York Press Office argued that laws concerning flyering and postering on campus are agreed between the university and YUSU and that the Students’ Union helps to enforce the rules.

A spokesperson for the university said: “The University and YUSU agreed around ten years ago on a series of protocols covering advertisements on campus. Fly posting is banned due to mess, fire hazards etc. I understand the responsibility for policing those protocols lies with YUSU.”

The Student Development Assembly will take place on Tuesday week 3 at 6.30pm in P/L/001 and all are free to attend. See the e-petition here.
