Following the recent earthquake in Turkey the University of York’s Turkish society has been holding events to help those affected by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in the East of the country.

The university’s welfare team has been offering support to students personally affected by the disaster, whilst the Turkish Society has led fundraising efforts at the university to send aid to those caught up in the disaster, holding a series of events on campus.

The money raised is to go to the Turkish Red Crescent, part of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, which is providing much of the assistance following the earthquake.

The disaster on October 23 killed hundreds and injured thousands and left many homes destroyed as the winter approaches. The money raised will be used to help provide shelter to those made homeless, as well as providing food and medical supplies.

Already over 12,000 tents have been sent by the Turkish Red Cross to help victims, “tent cities” are being erected in places such as the local stadium in Erciş in the province of Van, the city worst affected by the disaster.

The society’s events have been part of international efforts to help those affected by the disaster, the last event of the series is on Wednesday, November 2 and will be held in The Courtyard from 2pm as part of an ISA coffee afternoon. Those wishing to help the appeal are asked to speak to members of the committee of the Turkish Society.
