Students to march over lack of lighting on campus

"Reclaim the Night
The Women's Committee also held a march in February
Monday, 28th November 2011
YUSU is holding a ‘Reclaim the Night march’ on Thursday week eight after concerns were raised by students over the lack of lighting in some parts of campus.

The Welfare Committee has teamed up with Women’s Officers Nell Beecham & Cat Wayland and their committee to organise the march as they aim to draw the university’s attention to part of campus which have few, or in some places, no streetlights.

Particular areas of concern for students include the Walmgate Stray, the walkway between Physics and Derwent, and Halifax and its approach.

The march, on Thursday, December 1, will see the YUSU officers and any students who wish to get involved march from Market Square, around campus and its surrounding areas and finish at Courtyard, where there will be guest speakers.

Women’s Officers Nell Beecham & Cat Wayland said: “The aim of the march is to illustrate to the university the concern for student and staff safety in the poorly-lit areas within and surrounding our campus.

“We are demanding that the university takes action to ensure that there is adequate lighting around campus, and we are lobbying York City Council to do the same for the areas surrounding campus.”

The Women’s Committee held a ‘Reclaim the Night’ in February 2011, which saw students march around campus with placards and megaphones in an attempt to bring the issue of lighting to the university’s attention.

Welfare Officer Bob Hughes revealed that a survey will be carried out campus-wide by the Welfare and Women’s Committees to collate students’ opinions on lighting around the university. The survey is due to be launched in week eight at the ‘Reclaim the Night march’.

Hughes said: “The survey hopes to discover what students' perceptions of lighting and safety on campus are, what they would like to see changed, and which key areas they feel need targeting. The findings will then be compiled into a report to take to the University to push for change.

“I have spoken to key members of staff about this, ranging from the Facilities Managers, who oversee specific zones of campus, to Senior Management and the local Council, and there has been a generally positive reaction.

“The campaign has quite big aims and seeks to tackle a number of longstanding issues, and so has long-term aims, but I think we will see changes this year and next in terms of certain areas of campus getting better lighting and security, and a greater focus being put on student safety across the board.

“Key areas we have been looking at have included Walmgate Stray, the walkway between Physics and Derwent, and Halifax and its approach, but there are a large number of other areas that we are looking at, and I'd encourage any students who can think of unsafe and/or poorly lit areas of campus to contact either myself or the Women's Officers, and also to contribute to the survey.”

The march will take place on Thursday, December 1 (week eight), meeting at Market Square at 5.45pm and proceeding to march around 6pm.
