Wednesday, 7th December 2011
In a meeting yesterday (Tuesday, December 6), the Senior Management Group approved two million pounds of measures “aimed at further improving the student experience”, to be implemented from the next Academic year.

Measures include full 24-hour library opening, to be trialled in the spring term; night-time staffing in every college; extra funding for key texts; free sports membership and an international York Study Centre, though it is yet to be decided as to whether there will be more than one, or in which countries the International Centre(s) will be based.

Though many of the measures have been hinted in at the past, and some are long-term YUSU campaign promises, there are some previously named possibilities that are notable in their absence. Providing free laptops to all students, a highly debated option, is not on the list. The provision of mandatory text books for no charge is likewise missing and the option to make all printing on campus free also misses out.

The highly-student-supported moves to minimise the staff-student ratio and refurbishment of additional teaching spaces have been agreed to by the Senior Management Group, with increased staffing of the award-winning Open Door team and continuation of the (previously grant-funded) Maths Skills Centre showing that the SMG are also considering the welfare needs of students.

The full list stands as below:

  • 24-hour opening of the Library
  • A bundle of key texts and reading resources for incoming undergraduate students
  • Additional spend on key texts for all students
  • Continuation of the Maths Support Centre
  • Digital recording of lectures
  • Additional spend on refurbishing teaching spaces
  • Additional academic staff to reduce Student-Staff Ratios
  • Additional spend on postgraduates who teach
  • Increased spending on student internships to support the employability agenda
  • Abolition of charges for participation in college sport
  • Additional spend on coaching of sports clubs through York Sport
  • Night-time staffing in all 8 colleges
  • Additional staffing in the Open Door team
  • Funding of an International Study Centre for York students

Sounds like a good list, but it's hardly worth £6,000 each!
