Iranian TV covers YUSU referenda

Iran Pres TV
Monday, 12th December 2011
Written by Alan Belmore

Tim Ellis has spoken of his embarrassment as an Iranian media outlet described the recent rejection of a YUSU referendum motion as an example of anti-Israeli feeling in York.

The story was covered by Press TV, a 24-hour news network owned by the Iranian Government. In 2010, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran suggested the organisation “has acted as an arm of intelligence and security agencies implicated in gross human rights violations since the disputed presidential election of June 2009”.

The story, which was published online on Friday, December 9 states: “York University's Students Union put to vote the proposal flouted by pro-Israeli lobbyists to garner support of the racist regime of Israel through initiating the twin partnership scheme.

“The British public in general does not agree with the policies adopted in favour of the Zionists, an example of which is the rejection by York students of any association with an Israeli university based in occupied Palestine” it continued.

Peter Spence, who ran the campaign opposing the motion, disagreed with Press TV’s stance: “I find it extremely unlikely that the referendum result was a vote against Israel and suspect that students simply recognised that to take such a political position would be an extension beyond YUSU's remit.

“Looking at the voting turnout there are comparatively small numbers of students active in campaigning on either side of the issue on York's campus.”

As The Yorker reported last week, the motion to twin with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem received one of the heaviest defeats of any motion put to a student wide vote in York in recent history on a turnout of 8%.

The story will be an embarrassment for YUSU, whose comments on the union blog that that the high turnout reflecting the “importance” of the vote were quoted in the article. The Yorker understands however that YUSU were not contacted for a response before the article was published by the Iranian outlet.

It was a bit of a vote against Israel, but it was hardly a rejection of "any kind of association" and it was hardly "one of the heaviest defeats of any motion put to a student wide vote". It was a minor vote on a biased UGM motion that was barely detected by *our* media. Kudos to the Iranian Press

Though they probably googled 'israel' in UK media just as whoever found this was likely googling 'YUSU'...

By heaviest defeat, I refer to the fact that only 11% of students voted for the motion. One of the lowest "for" tallies in recent YUSU history.

Seems like a bit of a non-story - if they're owned by the government of Iran, use such obviously partisan language in their 'news' story and can't even get the name of the university right, there doesn't need to be much heed paid to them.

Well not really.
1) They did get the name of the university right.
2) All Iranian media that isn't owned by the state is controlled by it and censored.
3) It's who hears the news and what they believe of it that matters and it's a pretty major media outlet.
