JJs under threat of closure

Drinks
Wednesday, 21st November 2007
The Halifax College bar, JJ’s, faces potential closure after a drop in custom in recent months.

A new Facebook group entitled ‘JJs – use it or lose it’ has been created by Halifax students in an attempt to raise awareness and save their college bar.

The group explains: “The bar has been exceptionally quiet this term. It’s future existence as a bar shall be under consideration at the end of this term, and currently the word on the street is that it’s going to be closed before January.”

The group aims to promote regular attendance to JJs and Halifax events, whilst also suggesting new ideas as to how to make the bar more popular. The bar is currently open Thursday to Sunday nights from 6.00pm to 10.00pm. Regular Halifax Xtra events and pub quizzes organised by the Halifax JCRC are also held.

Ideas for improvement already suggested include more drinks offers, bringing in real ale and showing a greater range of sporting events.

Most of the time there was no reason to GO to JJs, it was cheaper down the Derry or the Charles. Perhaps if JJs served coffee like all the other campus bars, or a wider variety of food it would be more popular. Yes the pizza is good, but when compared to the lunches available elsewhere on campus, is a tad bit expensive.

JJ's does serve tea and coffee... and with the exception of Monday nights (when it's closed anyway) it's cheaper than the Derry or Charles.

A very well written article, thanks. Let's hope it assists in promoting the use of JJ's such that it can continue to exist as a bar, if that is what people want!
