Halifax election race begins

Thursday, 29th November 2007
Election season has arrived and voting is underway for JCRC positions for the largest college on campus. The Yorker quizzed Halifax presidential candidates Lee Arden and David Sharp.

Lee Arden is running for Halifax president

Why do you want to be Halifax president?

Lee Arden (right) said:

I want to be Halifax president because I'm really enthusiastic about Halifax as a whole: from JJ's, to college sport, to the fantastic college spirit from everyone that's part of Halifax.

What will you bring to the job?

Determination to get things done. I feel that the past year a lot of things were discussed and talked about, but there wasn't enough action taken. I co-ordinated Freshers' Week in Halifax College, through which I gained a lot of experience in running things on a college level. I'm already looking at introducing student-rate newspaper and magazine subscriptions, to be delivered to Halifax.

If you could be in any other college, which one would it be?

I wouldn't leave Halifax for anyone!

Describe yourself in 3 words

Optimistic but realistic

What's the key issue for Halifax in the coming year and how will you approach it?

Service provision is the key issue for Halifax in the coming year. This includes the threat of JJ's and Costcutter closures. For these to remain a feature of the college, I feel, we need to run to stand still. To have any effect on this issue, I think its really important to raise awareness on how big these threats are to Halifax.

To save JJ's I want to have more events, and give people a reason to go in there. At the moment, apart from the bar quiz every Sunday, the occasional live music event and three late license events a term, the HCSA don't run anything in JJ's. I want to change this with free events, such as regular comedy, film nights, and Blues and other music genre nights.

What's the key issue for the University in the coming year and what is your position on that issue?

To continue to develop and improve Campus West while progressing with plans for Heslington East. The improvement of existing facilities, as a current student, will matter more to me as Halifax President.

Voting for Halifax positions closes at 2pm on Friday. To cast your vote go to www.yusu.org/elections

David Sharp's answers will be published later today.

Any particular reason that Halifax got a special article written about it? Aren't most JCRCs holding elections right now?

They are indeed Chris, and The Yorker will be covering the elections for each college.

Reports on the elections taking place in Alcuin, Vanbrugh, Langwith, Goodricke, James, Wentworth and Derwent will appear on the site in the next 48 hours.

I hope you'll keep your eyes peeled for these!

Thanks,
