Goodbye Laura: "fun, bubbly and amazingly clever"

Laura Gerstel

Friday, 30th November 2007
It will become the week that few will forget. Laura Gerstel, the girl who friends have described as "fun, bubbly and amazingly clever" and on track to graduate with a first from York, was found dead. One of her final notes "Laura is thinking: 'if only' " has been reported from London to Scotland. This week in York however, it was time to commemorate a friend lost.

Emma Schierbaum, who took Biochemistry with Laura, told how the news comes out of the blue to everyone who knew her. She said: “Laura was just a really great girl, fun and bubbly and amazingly clever, it’s just such a shock.”

Robin Corey, one of Laura’s close friends said: “Everyone who knew her loved her. She was one of the few people who it was always a genuine pleasure to be around and talk to, always so bright and bubbly and full of fun and laughter. I think I speak for my circle of friends when I say having Laura on a night out made the whole night more enjoyable. It's always such a shame when someone dies so young, but for Laura she was always so full of life that it seems all the more sad. She was genuinely one of my favourite people.”

Laura, from North Berwick near Edinburgh, was in her third year studying biochemistry at York. Her body was discovered in the early hours of Sunday in her off-campus accommodation. Police have announced there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death and have adjourned their inquest.

Tutors and friends of Laura saw her as an intelligent and popular student. She had been doing well in her studies and was on track to a first class degree.

Her Supervisor, Dr Jim Hoggett, expressed how Laura was a bright pupil, and was popular with both students and staff. He said: “She will be much missed in the Departments of Biology and Chemistry where she studied.”
