YUSU Annual Report released

YUSU annual report
YUSU Annual Report 2007
Saturday, 8th December 2007
This week saw the release of YUSU’s annual report for 2007.

The document, complied by Union President, Anne-Marie Canning, provides an overview of the Union’s performance for the year 2006-2007, highlighting both its achievements and its downfalls.

Much praise has been given to Union officers and their departments; Welfare’s efforts to provide wheelchair access at Toffs, the work of the Service and Finance department in trying to prevent college bar closure and the success of YUSU RAG in raising approximately £30,000 for charity are amongst the many university initiatives duly praised in the document.

The report does bring forward some of the concerns currently dogging the Union and the student population. The decrease in sales at Your:Books is mentioned; despite a protestation that ‘the business continued to make an important financial contribution to the Union,’ the service is now set to close.

The issue of a lack of 24-hour portering in some colleges (recently highlighted by a 24 hour sit-in protest at the Langwith Porters’ Lodge) also features, with former Langwith Chair Won Youn saying, “letters and petitions were sent to the VC with no real outcome as expected. But we are Langwith and we do not go down without a fight.”

Each college chair provided a review of JCRC activities throughout the year, outlining successes, such as the rejuvenation of the Alcuin bar to the current B Henry’s Cocktail bar and the money raised by last summer’s Big D event, alongside recurring problems such as the threat of closure looming over the Halifax bar, JJs, and the lack of space for events in Goodricke.
